When Rebirth and Soulstone interweave

Well…
There we have it, they had been tinkering on it for a very long time.

(source: the official forums)

The design for combat resurrection effects has changed a good deal for Cataclysm, and we want to make sure players are clear on how spells like Rebirth and Create Soulstone now function. Rebirth has a 10-minute cooldown and Create Soulstone has a 15-minute cooldown. On raid boss encounters, you can only use one of these combat resurrection spells (so one Rebirth or one Soulstone) per attempt for 10-player raids. For 25-player raids you can use three forms of combat resurrection per raid boss attempt (so three of any combination of Rebirth and Soulstone). The count is incremented as soon as a player accepts a resurrection, so one can always choose not to accept if he or she wants someone else to get the resurrection instead. There is no equivalent of the Sated debuff (which tracks Bloodlust/Heroism usage), but you will get an error message if you try to resurrect too many players, and we might add tracking to our raid interface if there is demand for it. Outside of raid content, you can use as many battle resurrections as you have available.

In a nutshell:
  • 10 minutes cooldown on the druid’s Rebirth
  • 15 minutes cooldown on the warlock’s SoulStone
  • in 25 man: combination of 3 battle resurrection abilities per encounter (per attempt)
  • in 10man1 battle resurrection ability per encounter (per attempt)
  • raid resurrection abilities include Rebirth and Soulstone, but exclude the shaman’s Ankh

“For those of you currently participating in the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm beta test, please note that this functionality may not be fully implemented as of yet. If you notice combat resurrections are not currently functioning as explained here, this is just a heads-up about the updated design intent behind them”.

I could be crying blue murder about reducing our functionality in raids, but I won’t. Or howl lustily about raidleaders now being fully able to cut down on druids in the raid setup, but I won’t either.

Why exactly?
Because it’s a change I personally consider fair and well thought through. (/ducks for any incoming rotten tomatoes)

Let’s face it, this change will leave very little space to initiative from both warlock or druid but we have all been in the situation (too often, in my case) where two druids decide to res simultaneously without being told, just to discover that multiple Rebirths are on cooldown when in dire need. Even though I impersonate chaos what healing behavior is concerned, I do however like a structure, good communication while raiding and I simply  _love_ discipline. We still bring a good healthy dose of utility to the raid but raidleaders will just have to be a bit more finicky and a lot more punctilious upon deciding who to bring back to life.

3 cr’s in 25 man, 1 in 10man and no restriction (apart from your 10min cooldown) in 5man is a change that will delicately spice up the game and re-introduce a certain brain requirement. We adopted a game play with druids being able to subsequently rectify other player’s bestialities. Honestly? No one likes cleaning up after the blunders so this modification in combat resurrection is right up my alley.

Additional notes on Rebirth
  • The resurrection is added to the counter when it gets accepted.
  • You can choose to discard it but the rebirth cooldown will still be wasted.
Additional notes on Soulstone

“One thing we’re considering with Soulstone is making it possible, in addition to its current functionality, to be cast on a dead player to give them the option of joining the living again”.

Additional notes on Ankh

“They better keep their grubby mitts of my ankh design!” They did. Ankh is considered a strict self-buff so as far as the change goes, it is not included in the combat resurrection lock-out.
